Light painting installation

Digital video installation, 2009

 <story>

Artsummerweek is a new art exhibition that takes place during the summer months in Gueux, France. Artists are invited to create work that relates to the exhibition space, which is housed within a 19th century barn.

Using materials found within the barn - such as cobblestones, bits of wood and a misplaced picture frame - Damien Bonnaud and I constructed an installation that we felt worked well with the space. Then I photographed it, imported the photos into Photoshop, and projected the photos of the installation onto the installation itself, painting and texturizing the installation with light emanating from a projector.

The process of manipulating a digital image so that it can be projected precisely over its real world counterpart proved to be interesting in both its aesthetic possibilities relating to color and texture, as well as its trompe l'oeil characteristics, which hold up even upon close inspection. The process of drawing directly on physical surfaces using Photoshop - a program almost exclusively used to edit digital images - was also an interesting way to transform objects in a physical space (see
, for example). In many ways, this project is about creating a bridge between the physical and digital.

This piece changes color four times roughly every 100 seconds. It measures approximately 12' x 8'. It will be on view at
, Gueux, France, from July 3rd - September 30, 2009.
