Yellow Building

Site-specific, public art digital video installation, 2009

 <story>

Yellow Building transforms a
by fusing it with a patch of Andalusian (southern Spain) landscape.

The urban/industrial landscape of Gowanus, Brooklyn can be characterized by warehouses, red brick, grime, large transport trucks, busses, few residents and shops ranging from tire to marble. The picturesque landscape of southern Spain is marked by olive and orange trees, heavy use of yellow, red, brown and white architectural elements, narrow winding streets, pedestrians and an incredibly warm light producing a multicolored pallet everywhere one looks. The installation of the latter in the former aims to create a playful and visually compelling landscape all its own.

Nearly two years in the making, this piece has gone through several phases of evolution before manifesting itself as a site-specific installation. It started as
of the Andalusian landscape done in marker on paper. These drawings were later scanned in and reworked to create a
. This in turn was printed out as color separations and, via silkscreening processes, transformed into a print on vellum for the <italLink href="../../art/musee_de_dunkerque" opens_in_new_window="1" target="_blank">Al Andaluz</italLink> exhibit at the Musée des Beaux Arts, Dunkerque, France. A desire to explore the possibilities of animation led to the creation of <italLink href="../../art/yellow_forest" opens_in_new_window="1" target="_blank">Yellow Forest</italLink>, which evolved yet again into the site-specific installation, Yellow Building. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of its evolution is the fact that this piece has gone from being about the landscape to being a part of the landscape.

The requirements for this installation are: two computers, two projectors, and single sheets of mylar taped over the windows using regular painter's tape. Video runs for 1'06 and loops. Audio provided by the surrounding environment.

Yellow Building was conceived for the
show SURFACE - Contemporary Artists Interpret Landscape. The exposition ran from March 20th, 2009 - April 2nd, 2009.
